Kruger National Park and its surrounding private reserves are among the best places in the world to see lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino in a single day.
South Africa is home to the world’s largest population of both black and white rhinos. Recent 2025 reports indicate a 16% decline in rhino poaching nationwide, despite continued pressure in Kruger.
The coastline is famous for the “Marine Big Five”—whales (southern right and humpback), great white sharks, dolphins, seals, and the African Penguin.
In the arid north, look for black-maned lions, meerkats, and desert-adapted antelopes like the gemsbok.
